NYCOA NYLON 1637, 1637W, and 870 NYLON 6

NYCOA 1637, 1637W and 870 are plasticized, heat stabilized extrusion materials used by the Wire and Cable Industry for protective jacketing.

These materials possess an excellent balance of mechanical properties including stiffness, impact strength, and toughness.

In addition, the nylon material offers exceptional chemical resistance to oils and gasoline, and provides outstanding performance in applications involving exposure to elevated temperatures. The nylon jacket is an asset when applied over PVC in building wire because it protects the insulation during conduit pull-though, and reduces the force needed to pull the wires through conduit.

NYCOA 1637, 1637W and 870 are recognized by Underwriters Laboratories, and therefore meet the most rigorous of requirements for protective jacketing.
NYCOA nylons are also used in appliance wire and machine tool wire for oil and grease resistance, and in radiant heating cables for resistance to thermal degradation. In weather resistant form, 1637W, is used as a general protective coating for many types of wire.

NYCOA 1637, 1637W and 870 can be processed at line speeds up to
6000 ft/min, dependent on the size of the wire and extrusion equipment.

GENERAL PROCESSING GUIDELINES FOR NYCOA NYLON 1637, 1637W, and 870 NYLON 6

  I: Moisture
NYCOA nylons are supplied in moisture-proof packaging and pre-dried to a moisture content of less than.16%. Under normal conditions, the material does not have to be dried before use. However, if drying does become necessary, the use of a desiccant dryer at 170¼ and -40 dewpoint is recommended. The drying time will be dependent on the moisture content of the pellets. After extrusion, moisture has a positive effect. It acts as a plasticizer to provide additional flexibility to the wire jacket, and can relieve stresses built up in the nylon jacket during processing, leading to better low temperature performance of the jacket.

  II:

Machinery recommendations

    Screw Design: A. L/D=24:1
      B. Compression Ratio: 3.5-4.0:1
      C.

Number of flights:
a.  Feed          8-10
b.  Transition  8-6
c.  Metering    8

      D. Example:  Flight Depth with a 2.5" barrel I.D.
a.  Feed         0.340"
b.  Metering   0.085

III: A screenpack utilizing a stack of meshes of 20-60-100-200-20 is recommended. This will push the melt back and create a higher head pressure, which improves metering of the resin.
  IV:

Vacuum: The use of vacuum is recommended in order to improve jacket tightness and to remove gasses created by the PVC inner layer.
Maximum cone length should be 1/4".

  V: Extrusion Temperature Profile:
Zone:                Rear       2         3         4     Adapt.     Die     Melt
      Temp ¼F           475       500    530    530     520        520     530
                               485       520    550    550

The humpback profile, with higher mid-zone temperatures, will move the melt further back in the barrel allowing for more rapid melting. This will dramatically reduce the possibility of entrapped air being carried forward to the die and producing voids. A secondary advantage is that application of higher temperatures in the mid zones does not cause degradation in the die. Early melting of the nylon results in a smoother, more metered flow.

As line speeds increase, the melt temperature should be increased. This insures the quality of the jacket and with use of the proper sized pin and die set, insures the proper draw down ratio. Melt temperatures can vary from 520 ¼F at slower line speeds of about 800 FPM to a high of 550 ¼F at speeds over 2500 FPM. Temperatures above 550 ¼F should not be used, as it may lead to degradation of the resin.

VI: Quenching should be done in the following stages:
Initial water bath temperature:            120-140 ¼F
Secondary water bath temperature:   90-100 ¼F
Final water bath temperature:             50-60 ¼F

The water bath(s) should be long enough to sufficiently cool the wire to as close to room temperature as possible when spooled.  Spooling the wire wet is recommended to further condition the jacket while the product is in storage.

VII: The use of a die and pin set with a draw down ratio (DDR) of 8:1-12:1, depending on the size of the conductor. This general rule is especially important in the smaller wire sizes.
